ESD is the sudden and momentary electric current that flows between two objects at different electrical potentials. The most recognizable form of ESD is a spark. Common causes of ESD events are static electricity and electrostatic induction where an electrically charged object is placed near a conductive object that is isolated from ground and then comes in contact with a conductive path.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aerotech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/esd.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4488\" width=\"250\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aerotech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/esd.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.aerotech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/esd-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 1. Example of an ESD protected motion system with electroless nickel coating.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Electronic devices can suffer permanent damage when subjected to a small ESD and care must be taken with machine design to ensure no charge can build up. Aerotech has a long history of supplying ESD protected precision motion systems to the electronics manufacturing, data storage and semiconductor industries.
